Under the scientific management of Paulino Capdepón and Juan José Pastor, directors of the Centre of Musical Research and Documentation, associated with CSIC, two basic aspects will be debated at this conference: the historic musical heritage (Cervantes appears in numerous quotes about songs, romances, carols, dances) and the musical reception (the presence of Cervantes’ texts in musical performances). Groups of European and Spanish researchers will share the results of their studies about Cervantes’ work from the perspective of musicology. Twelve members of the scientific board come from different foreign universities (Oxford, Michigan, Sorbonne, Nottingham, Heidelberg, Bologna, Saarland…) and from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and the US. This conference will unite the pragmatic approach of the English-speaking researchers with the other approach of a Germanic tradition, firmly based on texts. Moreover, the Spanish research group in the field of musical heritage – such as the case of the group led by Professor Antonio Ezquerro, an exponent of the international cataloguing standards of the International Inventory of Musical Resources (RISM) – will expose their contributions which will be discussed with the help of international prestigious speakers. The purpose will be to define and place the musical reality of Cervantes’ times and its significance, as well was its function in the writer’s texts.
